French Populism and the Construction of Visual Narratives
摘要
This chapter examines visual communications of French far-right Rassemblement National (formerly Front National) and far-left la France Insoumise. Despite their ideological differences, both parties exhibit strategic similarities in their use of visual media to engage with the electorate and enhance their legitimacy. We adopt a multidisciplinary methodology that integrates iconology, semiology, and intermediality to uncover deeper meanings behind visual representations. Ultimately, we posit that understanding the visual culture surrounding these populist parties can illuminate broader trends in contemporary political discourse, where the interplay between imagery and ideology plays a crucial role in shaping public perception and mobilising support.
