In 2024, French President’s decision to dissolve the National Assembly to recalibrate power dynamics amidst a fragmented party landscape has evidenced the rise of far-right and far-left populisms, reflecting a broader socio-economic discontent. While drawing a definition of populism seems complex regarding its internationalisation, the relationship between populism, representation, and media is undeniable and prompts questions about the future of democracy. In the context of France, while serving both as a critique of existing structures and as a mobilising force for various social segments, populism is articulated through competing narratives between the Rassemblement National’s exclusionary vision and la France Insoumise’s inclusive one. However, this book aims to demonstrate that they both navigate in/out of the system to construct their respective visualities and collective identities.
