Decision Making and Working Memory: Bridging the Gap

Decision makingDecision makingand working memoryWorking memory are conceptually related: inasmuch as the former involves integration of beliefs and preferences for the purpose of actions, it must rely on the latter. Both fields have generally acknowledged this relationship but have largely refrained from delving into the details. Research studies on working memoryWorking memory expressed interest in reasoningReasoning much more than in judgment and decision making. Research studies on judgment and decision making, dominated by theHeuristics heuristics-and-biases tradition, have long tackled issues related to working memory only implicitly, by assuming that cognitive limitations are a main reason for using heuristics (mental shortcuts). More recently, the dual-process view of thinking has explicitly stated that access to working memoryWorking memory is a defining feature of the putative Type 2 processes. However, the statement was not followed by extensive research testing specific hypotheses related to working memory. We propose ways in which this gap could be bridged from both sides and consider the embedded-processes approach to working memory (Cowan in Psychol Bull 104:163–191, 1988 [2]; Cowan in Models of working memory: Mechanisms of active maintenance and executive control.
