Community-based waste management holds significant potential for reducing waste pollution in local water bodies. However, socioeconomic and infrastructural limitations within communities often hinder this progress. This chapter explores the complex relationship between technology and reality in such initiatives, highlighting the benefits and drawbacks of technological solutions for waste collection and disposal near water bodies. It examines the challenges of technology adoption in diverse communities using real-world examples and data. The importance of community participation, capacity building, and tailored solutions is emphasized. It is important to understand the impact of technology on waste management practices and addressing major implementation barriers, and also to bridge the gap between technological advancements and on-the-ground realities. This approach can ultimately foster more sustainable and effective waste management solutions at the community level, promoting the safety of our local water bodies.
