Climate action, being the need of the hour, sits high on strategic agenda of almost all responsible and leading national and international organizations including United Nations. United Arab Emirates is proactively driving this agenda nationally, regionally, and internationally. University of Birmingham Dubai campus held an extensive programme of events, discussions and projects on and off Dubai campus to support UN Climate Change Conference (UNFCCC COP 28) hosted by the United Arab Emirates at the end of 2023. The built environment sector contributes more than one third of the energy related to carbon emissions. University of Birmingham across all campuses including the UK and Dubai is leading by example by taking actions across various fronts including smart infrastructure for its own campus-built areas. These include but are not limited to School of engineering building UK, Rail Research Centre UK, and University’s Dubai campus. This paper opens the discussion on such efforts in United Arab Emirates. Climate action is high on priority list of the UAE government and regulatory bodies who have established platforms for climate friendly practices. This leads to tremendous opportunities for universities in the region to innovate and share impactful practices with all walks of life. The Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges (EAUC) proposed Standardized Carbon Emissions Framework (SCEF) is one of the effective methodologies at least for reporting for sector specific emission category and also adopted by the University of Birmingham. For the purpose of tracking year on year emissions, UoB reported a 7% decrease in carbon emissions across two defined scopes and 11% increase against the third one. The spend from the university’s Dubai campus is included partially within the report based on access to the data in Dubai. UoB is keen to generate collaborative momentum with all sectors including universities in the UAE. Experience with member Universities of the Russell group in the UK on this topic is an added advantage.
