Plastic stands as an integral material in our modern society, contributing significantly to the global plastic waste crisis. A Dubai-based university addressed this challenge through a collaboration with key industry entities and the application of the 3R model to foster sustainability within its community. The collaboration includes Imdaad, a waste management company responsible for collecting mixed plastic from the community; Farz, a material recovery facility dedicated to segregating polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic; and a sustainable manufacturing solutions entity named DGrade to transform the PET plastic into polyester fibers, yielding over 200 types of fabrics. The clothes and supplies that DGrade synthesizes from these recycled fabrics are then sold back to the university, thereby closing the recycling loop. This innovative process exhibits substantial environmental benefits, utilizing 76% less energy, 20% less water (with the remaining 80% recycled), and reducing carbon emissions by 79%. The initiative not only addresses the urgent need to manage plastic waste but also serves as a model for sustainable practices within the higher education sector. Globally, universities and colleges have long played a role as trailblazers in sustainability initiatives, leading by example in addressing environmental challenges. This research advocates for broader adoption of similar initiatives in the United Arab Emirates and beyond, inspiring a ripple effect of positive change.
