This paper examines the expanding field of AI-powered plot generation, specifically envisioning a television series set in a counterfactual scenario. The potential of AI for story generation represents a significant leap forward in creative writing, with implications that have already been addressed in scholarship. However, this paper focuses on a previously unexamined topic: the use of AI in crafting plots for television series set in counterfactual scenarios. In particular, the focus will be on the potential of AI (specifically, Chat GPT and Google Gemini) to generate a plot centred on a pivotal historical event: the sixteenth-century Lutheran Reformation. While initial responses from the AI on this topic may be generic, resembling a textbook summary, further specification of narrative elements (such as location and characters) reveals a more nuanced and potentially insightful political and cultural vision. The AI’s suggestions appear to lean towards a progressive perspective. This outcome highlights the promising possibilities that AI-powered tools offer in the realm of creative arts education, particularly by fostering engagement with counterfactual narratives.
