The Senior Executive “Recycling” Workshops
摘要
This chapter describes senior executive “recycling” workshops based on research conducted at INSEAD. These open-enrollment transformative workshops have proven to be effective in helping people and organizations change. Key to being accepted onto a workshop is psychological mindedness, the capacity to be open/responsive, and a serious interest/commitment to understanding oneself. Participants’ life case studies are the main source of interpretative material and are used throughout the modules. The challenge, however, is how to work successfully with people who all think they are the center of the universe and develop a method of intervention that accelerates and condenses more traditional therapeutic processes—yet remains true to basic clinical principles—and create nontransient changes in behavior. With the help of a case study, the requirements for successful change are discussed, noting the human tendency for resistance. To be willing to change, it advises, people must be concerned about their present situation, something often triggered by a focal event/crisis, and they need to be able to conceptualize the issue. Fundamentally, change needs willingness, motivation, psychological strength, receptiveness, and flexibility. This, it is suggested, can be achieved through creating an intense learning community—ie the workshop—to set the stage for a concentrated change effort.
