Political and Crisis Management of the Election Campaign: A Study of Two Leaders
摘要
This chapter examines the political and crisis management strategies of Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer in the lead-up to, and during, the 2024 UK General Election. Using a comprehensive analytical framework, the chapter evaluates the leaders’ abilities to navigate complexity, make decisions, coordinate responses and communicate effectively during times of crisis. The findings indicate that Sunak’s leadership was characterised by a series of self-inflicted crises, while Starmer’s approach—despite some political stumbles—was characterised by a more cautious and strategic rebranding of the Labour Party. The chapter emphasises the importance of adaptability, coherence and maintaining a sustained political narrative in the political management of campaigns. It also highlights the necessity for leaders to balance the complexities of strategy, ideology and public sentiment, prioritising a clear and compelling vision for the future.
