Humanity’s relationship with the ocean has shifted from sustainable coexistence to exploitative industrialization. Once revered as a limitless resource, the ocean now faces severe degradation from overfishing, pollution, and habitat destruction. Our pursuit of short-term growth and expansion has led to widespread environmental harm, such as collapsing fisheries and degraded reefs. This chapter calls for a fundamental redefinition of our ocean relationship, urging a move toward stewardship and responsible management. It advocates systemic changes, enhanced conservation, and cooperation, emphasizing that true progress requires acknowledging the ocean’s finite nature and adopting sustainable practices to ensure its long-term vitality and our survival.
