Parasitism can cause a vast amount of suffering across all animal kingdoms and is therefore often declared as natural evil. Between different philosophies and theologies, the existence of parasites raises serious questions about the state of the natural world and the character of God. In this chapter, I reflect on the different forms of parasitism and the importance of an axiological assessment of parasites. Using viruses as a case study, I explore the complexity of parasites and how this challenges us to question our presuppositions and limited perspectives. Remarkably, it is not only our assessment of parasites that is shaping our philosophy, worldview, and idea of God. Our perception of parasites is also fundamentally influenced by all these factors in the first place.
