This chapter draws together and offers an in-depth, critical examination of a number of issues alluded to in previous chapters. Various long-term illnesses are explored, illustrating increased vulnerability to degenerative conditions in later life and current intensification of medicalised lives during this period. The impact of functional deterioration on social and mental health is examined. Lessons learned from how restrictions during the Covid-19 pandemic exacerbated physical and mental decline are discussed. That such complex challenges require a holistic and patient-centred approach, offering integrated care, through multidisciplinary collaboration is established. Useful new initiatives such as social prescribing and use of technology are considered. All this sits well near the end of the book and prepares readers for the last chapter on bereavement and grief across diverse ageing trajectories.
