Later Life
摘要
Health and wellbeing in later life requires achieving a stable identity through reflection on past personal, biological, and social changes. Social and psychological pressures are often experienced due to reduction in personal autonomy and increased vulnerability to neglect, abuse, violence, and accumulated critical life events. Negative experiences are compounded by the insidious social acceptance of ageism which allows stereotyping and discrimination deemed unacceptable if practiced against other minority groups. Social preference for eternal youthfulness and the demands of new technology within a post-Covid era can prove challenging. Healthy ageing can be promoted through protective, preventive care strategies, reducing marginalisation, partnerships with support groups, and assistance with older people’s engagement with digital technology. Good interpersonal skills, encouraging self-compassion, and suggesting more adaptive coping skills also help.
