This paper seeks to answer the following questions: To what extent do the programs, rights, and initiatives related to care that have been developed in Mexico position care as a significant axis for social policy and represent progress in the agenda of defamiliarizing care in the Mexican welfare regime? And to what extent does the historical inertia or path dependence of conservative family policies continue to operate? This chapter presents the theoretical and methodological perspective used, analyzes the historical background of familialism in Mexico, emphasizes family policies of neoliberal governments over the past two decades, examines the transformations these policies have undergone during the administration of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, reviews the proposal for the creation of the National Care System in 2020, and concludes with the presentation of a series of basic data on care deficits in Mexico.
