This chapter explores advanced image analysis techniques in cultural data science, extending beyond metadata to include visual features extracted directly from images. By leveraging R libraries and cloud-based tools, this chapter demonstrates methods for detecting dominant colors, performing face and object recognition, and extracting text from images using optical character recognition (OCR). Practical examples include analyzing images from the MoMA collection to identify color compositions, detect faces, and recognize text.
