Ethical and Privacy Issues in Technology
摘要
The integration of technology into health care and rehabilitation has brought exciting possibilities for improving patient care. From wearable devices that monitor health in real time to artificial intelligence (AI) tools that assist in diagnosis and treatment, these innovations are transforming the way we approach health and recovery. However, alongside these benefits come important ethical and privacy concerns that we must address to ensure that these advancements truly serve people in a fair and meaningful way. This chapter explores the ethical principles that should guide the use of technology in health care, including respect for patient autonomy, promoting well-being (beneficence), avoiding harm (non-maleficence), ensuring fairness (justice), and protecting privacy. We delve into privacy concerns like data breaches, ownership of personal health information, informed consent, and challenges with sharing sensitive data across borders. Real-world examples, such as wearable devices being misused by insurance companies or biased AI systems leading to incorrect diagnoses, highlight the urgent need for accountability and transparency in healthcare technology. As we navigate these challenges, frameworks like GDPR and HIPAA provide valuable guidance, but gaps remain. Emerging technologies like blockchain and ethical AI show promise for addressing privacy and equity issues. At the same time, there’s a pressing need for collaboration among patients, healthcare providers, developers, and policymakers to create solutions that prioritize trust, transparency, and inclusivity. Ultimately, by focusing on ethical awareness and patient-centered care, we can harness the full potential of technology while safeguarding human dignity and rights. This chapter aims to inspire thoughtful conversations and practical steps toward building a healthcare future that balances innovation with responsibility.
