Based on the well-documented relative effects of the initial letter and exterior letters of a word, compared to interior letters, on word recognition in Roman script, this study examined whether this phenomenon would also be observed in visual word recognition in Hangul. Two experiments were conducted using masked priming lexical decision tasks. Experiment 1 (n = 80) used a cluster of primes (monogram primes) comprising an initial consonant (C), middle vowel (V), or final consonant (C) of each syllable within the CVC disyllabic word (CC, VV, and CC, respectively). Experiment 2 (n = 67) utilized a cluster of primes (bigram primes) consisting of two adjacent graphs from the initial position (CVCV), those from the final position (VCVC), and consonants only (CCCC) from the CVC disyllabic word. Experiment 1 demonstrated no significant main effects or interaction effects in response time (RT), with the identity condition being a reference category. In the accuracy rate, however, significant main effects were observed in word frequency as well as the initial CC and middle VV primes. Experiment 2 showed neither significant main effects nor interaction effects on RT but a significant frequency effect on accuracy. Overall, the findings of this study indicated script-specific position effects on visual word recognition in Hangul, in line with studies conducted in Thai, Arabic, and Hebrew.
