This chapter will discuss Eojeols, which are the core units forming sentences in the Korean language, conveying both semantic and syntactic information. From the linguistic, psycholinguistics, and computational points of view, we review empirical evidence from behavioral and neuroimaging studies, leading to the proposal of the Adaptive Eojeol Processing Model (AEPM). This model offers a comprehensive framework for understanding Eojeol processing, accounting for the cognitive economy, which posits that simple or highly frequent Eojeols would be processed faster than less frequent or complex Eojeols that demand more cognitive resources. It further underscores the context-sensitive processing and the hemispheric interaction, in which word stems are processed by both hemispheres, while grammatical morphemes are predominantly processed by the left hemisphere, with the right hemisphere contributing contextually. In conclusion, this chapter suggests a flexible model that accommodates the adaptive and context-dependent mechanisms underlying Eojeol recognition and processing.
