Introduction to the Volume
摘要
This chapter opens the Handbook of the Korean Language and Literacy: Insights into Hangul and Text Processing (hereafter Handbook) by providing introductory information, including the scope and organization of the volume, intended audiences, terminology, and Romanization. Although global interest in Korea, the Korean language, and the Korean alphabet, Hangul, has increased in the recent decade, as indicated in the recent surge in the Korean language programs worldwide, an updated scholarly platform that encompasses a systematic review of the language and the writing system, theories, scientific inquiries, and pragmatics has been lacking. To fill the gap, this volume brings together a collection of chapters written by renowned scholars worldwide, offering a rich corpus of theoretical insights and empirical findings, to serve as a foundation for further studies and explorations of the Korean language and Hangul.
