This concluding chapter reflects on Derrida’s critical contribution to the animal turn in the academy. Theorizing the link between animal cultural erasure and material immiseration represented the culmination of Derrida’s wider project to interrogate and deconstruct language and narrative as a means of enforcing boundaries of inclusion and omission. The texts studied in this book illustrate the ways reception and interpretation are framed and informed by the wider, hegemonic assemblages and how counter-anthropocentric readings allow us to deconstruct the premise of human exceptionalism and imagine new pathways for an animalized literary education.
