While many staples of literary education feature animal stories and characters, they are almost exclusively subordinated to human issues or erased through an imposed humanist allegorical interpretation that usurps the animal story. I posit that literary education requires a reconceptualization beyond the humanist frames that have thus far reduced and ultimately written animals out of texts. This chapter examines the legacies of humanism and engages with literary alternatives to the anthropocentric status quo by exploring possibilities for re-imagining canonical literary educational animal-oriented texts, specifically E.B. White’s Charlotte’s Web, George Orwell’s Animal Farm, and Yann Martel’s Life of Pi before examining counter-anthropocentric pedagogical possibilities through Barbara Gowdy’s The White Bone and Bong Joon-Ho’s film Okja.
