This introduction presents the rationale of the book, which explores the role of imagination in animal ethics and its constitutive links with empathy/sympathy and anthropomorphism. First, the meaning of “limit” is defined not as a negative restriction but rather as a “condition of possibility” for the deployment of imagination. Then the scope of the book is defined: since the debates on moral imagination, empathy/sympathy, and anthropomorphism are far too broad and articulated even for one book for each topic, I use the questions and issues raised in J.M. Coetzee’s The Lives of Animals as a general frame that enables the exploration of some salient topics. Finally, the structure of the book is briefly explained.
