Leveraging XR for Environmental Communication and Behavior Change: A Media Perspective
摘要
Extended Reality (XR), encompassing Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Mixed Reality (MR), is emerging as a transformative tool in environmental communication and behavior change. This chapter explores the potential of XR technologies to create immersive, interactive, and emotionally engaging experiences that foster environmental awareness and inspire sustainable actions. By integrating XR with storytelling, gamification, and real-time data visualization, this chapter examines how media can bridge the gap between abstract environmental concepts and tangible personal impact. We analyze case studies demonstrating XR's effectiveness in addressing critical issues such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution, emphasizing its role in education, advocacy, and participatory decision-making. Additionally, we discuss the psychological and behavioral mechanisms influenced by XR, including empathy generation, experiential learning, and cognitive reinforcement, which are pivotal in driving long-term behavior change. The chapter also addresses the ethical and practical challenges of using XR for environmental communication, such as accessibility, digital equity, and the environmental footprint of XR technologies. Finally, we propose a framework for leveraging XR in media strategies to amplify environmental narratives, catalyze community engagement, and promote actionable solutions for a sustainable future.
