The Potential of Extended Reality in Environmental Education: A New Paradigm for Learning
摘要
Environmental education (EE) in the past has been almost pedagogically constrained by physical constraints where textbooks, field trips and use of limited audio visuals were the main modes of teaching methods. Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality and Mixed Reality are subcategories of Extended Reality (XR), the latest development in Environmental education technology which brings in a fresh dimension to the field. This chapter emphasises on the role of Extended Reality technologies in environmental education with reference to the type of application, benefits, drawbacks, and the evolution of the immersive learning environment. Extended Reality is a much more engaging way to help learners comprehend multifaceted environmental processes as well as engage with the material at an emotional level, encouraging the desired green behaviour. They classified this chapter by major areas that demonstrate the usefulness of Extended Reality for Environmental education and supported the findings with the theories of pedagogy, and ways of technology.
