Assessing Reading Achievement in the Dinaric Region: An Introduction
摘要
This chapter aims to introduce the reader to IEA’s Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) 2021. PIRLS is an international comparative study that assesses fourth-grade reading comprehension in more than 50 education systems worldwide. As a trend study that is administered every 5 years, PIRLS monitors progress in students’ reading achievement and provides participating education systems with information about the performance of education systems to assist in effective and evidence-informed policymaking and reform. The focus of this publication is on the administration of PIRLS 2021, specifically in the Dinaric region, a diverse area located in South-eastern Europe. In this regional context, Albania, Croatia, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, and Slovenia participated in PIRLS 2021. The aim of the publication is to provide contextual evidence that frames the PIRLS 2021 results for each education system within the region. This chapter introduces readers to the region’s educational contexts and PIRLS and concludes with an outline of the chapters that shape the remainder of the volume.
