Traditionally, computer professionals (like other practitioners in engineering fields) have mistrusted philosophers, whose thinking they characterize as too abstract, and not sufficiently grounded in the reality of computing. Some philosophers suggest that computing professionals (and other engineers) over-emphasize the importance of technical issues while minimizing the importance of ethically significant principles. The genius of Deborah Johnson has been to engage with both computing professionals and philosophers and to develop insights that help increase understanding among both groups. This chapter explores how her recent work on algorithmic accountability illustrates Johnson’s approach, and how she succeeds in clarifying several crucial issues.
