The chapter focuses on Iberian/Galician Iron Age saunas allowing one to show their affinities (or lack thereof) with the Delaware Big House and Native North American sweat lodges. These two institutions help highlight the ancient roots of sweat healing and purification rituals. The section introduces the ancient pedras formosas, the unique archaic decorative structures of Galicia and Castro Culture. How are they linked to saunas and sweat houses? The section elaborates on how the Castro saunas hark back to pre-Roman times and can be associated in structure, meaning and uses with the Delaware Big House and the sweat lodge. The section focuses also on the differences between the Castro Northern and Southern saunas and which have to do with the saunas’ distinct earlier appearance and gendered life ways. I discuss the fact that Galician Castro baths had a different function when compared with that of the Roman bath-houses. The former were utilized primarily for social life and leisure activities, not primarily for the spiritual liminal activities that distinguish them from the semi-subterranean earth saunas. The latter are believed for the most part to be sites of ritual baths. How have scholars interpreted the sauna remains and statues and how does this reflect a gender bias? As I argue, the southern saunas bear significant traces of Old European lifeways and beliefs. In Iberia, the norm of the human becomes located in the Northern saunas’ warrior statues, while in matriarchy it was the goddess as representative of or as Mother Earth that presided over ceremonial life and represented the life force and its periodic renewal.
