The tower is an essential component of a horizontal axis wind turbine. This circumstance is both an advantage and a disadvantage. The disadvantage is, of course, the cost, which can make up a considerable part of the total cost of a wind turbine. On the other hand, the specific energy output of the rotor increases with increasing tower height. Theoretically, the optimal tower height is found at the intersection of the two growth functions of construction costs and energy yield. Unfortunately, this point of intersection cannot be given in a generally valid form. The installation site plays a decisive role. Finding the optimal tower height and the suitable construction type under these conditions requires a cross-component understanding of wind energy technology and use.
