Impact of Covid 19 on Skin Microbiome

A dynamic and intricate microbial population, the skin microbiome is crucial for preserving immunological response, skin health, and general homeostasis. With a focus on the COVID-19 pandemic, this chapter examines the relationship between skin microbiota and dermatological disorders, highlighting the negative effects of microbial dysbiosis. SARS-CoV-2 infection and related interventions (such as prolonged mask use and increased hygiene practices) disrupt microbial balance, resulting in dermatological manifestations like “maskne,” eczema, and exacerbation of psoriasis. It highlights important findings on the reciprocal relationship between systemic and skin microbiomes. Novel treatment approaches, such as the use of prebiotics and probiotics, customized skincare routines, and improvements in protective gear design, are assessed for their capacity to improve dermatological results and restore microbial eubiosis. In order to determine causal linkages and optimize microbiome-targeted therapeutics, the chapter emphasizes the necessity of multi-omics techniques and longitudinal investigations, which will guarantee better patient care and results both during and after the pandemic.
