This chapter provides an overview of the development of both the T-MITOCAR (Text-Model Inspection Trace of Concepts and Relations) method and its supporting software, highlighting common quantitative and qualitative applications as well as its limitations. T-MITOCAR builds upon established computational linguistic approaches and research on reasoning, particularly mental model theory. The methodology integrates three core theoretical foundations: the prominence of associations in human memory and reasoning, the structuring role of natural language in expressing semantic relationships—especially in written texts—and the necessity of tracing and evaluating individual knowledge representations. T-MITOCAR enables researchers and practitioners to map and analyze individual knowledge structures, including key concepts and misconceptions, and to compare them against expert knowledge, learning trajectories, or diverse knowledge sources through algorithmic integration. By focusing on associations, T-MITOCAR occupies a distinct methodological niche, making it relevant for addressing specific research questions.
