Context: Unsustainable agricultural practices are, among others, the result of inadequate soil monitoring, which causes its degradation and, therefore, that of the environment. Aim: To establish guidelines that guide the approach of long-range communication solutions for monitoring soil quality in the agricultural sector of Ecuador through the evaluation of LPWAN technologies. Method: The methodology selected for the research is Design Science, which proposes to design and investigate artifacts that will interact in a specific context. Results: This study presents a guide for monitoring solutions in the agricultural sector, obtained from comparing LoRaWAN and Sigfox technologies with similar prototypes in specific scenarios. Conclusions: The distance in the node-gateway section and obstacles are determining factors that affect the performance of LoRaWAN and Sigfox technologies. Sigfox technology performs better because it covers surfaces of 4 km without obstacles, while LoRaWAN offers the same performance at a maximum of 1.5 km under the same conditions.

摘要
