Enhancing Inquiry and Scientific Literacy in Second Graders: A Systematization of Experiences

This study focuses on the teaching and learning of Science and Technology in second-grade students at a private school in Carabayllo, Lima, Peru, over three months. The primary objective is to systematize the activities and strategies implemented, particularly inquiry-based approaches and scientific and technological literacy development. Utilizing a qualitative research methodology, the study examines the integration of scientific and technological competencies within the educational planning process, exploring how these competencies facilitate the acquisition of new scientific knowledge. The findings highlight several key factors contributing to the success of the educational experience. Comprehensive teacher training is a pivotal element, significantly impacting effective teaching practices. Additionally, the deliberate inclusion of all three core Science and Technology competencies during the planning phase fosters a holistic learning environment. Student motivation, particularly in formulating hypotheses, is a crucial driver of active engagement and deeper understanding. Furthermore, the study underscores the practical relevance of science education in enabling students to comprehend and address everyday problems. By linking scientific concepts to real-world applications, students gain a greater appreciation for the value of scientific inquiry and its implications for their daily lives. Overall, the research provides valuable insights into the effective teaching of Science and Technology at the primary school level, offering a comprehensive framework for enhancing scientific literacy and fostering a culture of inquiry among young learners. The systematization of these experiences serves as a model for other educators aiming to improve science education and literacy in early childhood education.
