Evaluation of Properties of Sports Socks Made with Synthetic and Biodegradable Yarn

In the textile industry, the selection of appropriate materials for various applications largely depends on the physical and mechanical properties of the fabrics. This research compared three types of fabrics used for sports socks: Bamboo, cotton, and acrylic. The properties evaluated were: bursting strength, tear resistance, abrasion resistance, and breathability. The sports socks were manufactured on a Weihuan circular knitting machine with a 3¾ inch diameter and 144 needles, using plain jersey stitch. For their construction, the selected base yarns were cotton (CO) 20/1 Ne, bamboo (BB) 20/1 Ne, acrylic (PAC) 1/35 Nm equivalent to 20/1 Ne, and elastane 75 dTex as the vanis yarn. The study results demonstrated that the PAC fabric exhibited the greatest strength and durability, followed by CO and BB fabrics. CO provides a good alternative in situations requiring adequate breathability, followed by BB and PAC. The effect of materials on the response variables yielded a p-value according to Shapiro-Wilk W, Anderson-Darling, Liliefors L, and Jarque-Bera tests, confirming that the data falls within the 95% confidence interval (p > 0.05). This study will assist in selecting appropriate, comfortable materials expected to meet athletes’ requirements.
