This chapter introduces the book’s key themes, arguments, approaches and terminology. It highlights aspects of the mutually beneficial relationship that existed between the early twentieth-century British regional repertory companies and Shaw. The introduction will contextualise this book in existing scholarship, unpacking the literature on which it draws and the gaps it seeks to fill. In addition to discussing relevant research in Shavian studies, this also includes engaging in debates around the place of the regional, national and global in theatre history and historiography.

This chapter introduces the book’s key themes, arguments, approaches and terminology.
