A Low-Cost LoRaWAN-Based Smart System for Cow Monitoring: A Case Study

In this paper, we present a livestock monitoring system built on a secure LoRaWAN (Long Range Wide Area Network) infrastructure. The system features a cow collar that measures bovine temperature using the MLX90615 sensor, heart rate with the MAX30102 module, and linear and angular movements with the MPU6050 GY-521 Gyro/Accelerometer sensor module. The collected data provide valuable insights into cows’ health and mobility. Additionally, a mobile application was developed to assist farmers by offering visualization and monitoring features, along with emergency warning notifications. The proposed technology was tested on a dairy farm in Grombaliya village, Tunisia. Experimental results demonstrate its effectiveness in assessing cows’ conditions and movements. Key advantages of this system include simplicity, portability, and cost-effectiveness, making it a practical solution for livestock management. The prototype collar-based health monitoring system proves beneficial for farmers by enabling the detection of potential health issues and monitoring cow activity without requiring physical intervention. This approach shows promise as a viable solution for addressing agricultural needs while promoting sustainable farming practices. It is particularly relevant for emerging nations like Tunisia, where precision agriculture is still in its nascent stages.
