Artificial Intelligence (AI) and related technologies are rapidly changing how we work and the psychosocial hazards we are exposed to. As these changes continue to transform industries and job roles, work design emerges as a crucial concept for helping to anticipate and mitigate uncertainties and challenges. In this chapter, we use the SMART work design model to address AI-related disruptions and their impact on employee wellbeing and sustaining high quality work. We consider AI’s potential to enhance or detract from employees’ sense of Mastery and Agency, their ability to experience work as Stimulating, and the quality of employees’ Relational work. We also consider how AI can influence job demands, making them more or less Tolerable. Importantly, we propose that the model can be applied proactively and practically at multiple stages in a technological process to mitigate psychosocial risks. Finally, we discuss future research questions needed to navigate this evolving landscape.
