Misinformation Regarding Domestic Violence
摘要
To fully understand the rampant misinformation about intimate partner violence (IPV) that is replete throughout major social media platforms, one must remember that social media reflects wider societal trends. Accordingly, it is important to confront and analyze the major public misconceptions about intimate partner violence in this chapter, with the cautionary note that some of these errors in information and reasoning have taken a strong hold over public attitudes toward IPV. This chapter is organized into an examination of a series of myths and errors in reasoning regarding intimate partner violence and a presentation of contemporary research regarding each of the areas of erroneous thought. Readers are encouraged to contextualize the peer-reviewed research (constantly updated) as a north star as we analyze myths, half-truths, oversimplifications, and facts surrounding intimate partner violence. As always, readers are reminded that intimate partner violence is a deeply complex crime, one that defies easy answers. Accordingly, multiple aspects of the analysis of IPV misconceptions are grounded in nuance.
