WhatsApp is one of the most important apps that lets us transmit text, audio, and multimedia files as well as have voice and video chats online in this day and age where everything is going digital. It was established by Facebook Inc. in 2009 alongside Brain Acton and Jan Koum and received it in 2014. It is gaining popularity because of its ease of use, cross-platform interoperability (available for Android, iOS, and web browsers), end-to-end message encryption, and the ability to use phone numbers as unique identification. This application enables users to start individual or group discussions, share their present location, and alter their status. Although the increasing usage of WhatsApp as a social media platform elevates the potential of becoming a crime target, there are just a few articles on the forensic examination of WhatsApp, and they are mostly focused on this mobile-only service. In this paper, we suggested a comprehensive forensic analysis framework for Windows-based WhatsApp lost media. While it is not feasible to evaluate every feature this application offers, our forensic investigation approach concentrates on erased material. We considered conducting an evaluative case study using the WhatsApp application, which is available on the Windows platform. For this case study, we created a crime scenario in an experimental setting, followed by an overview of a forensic methodology and technical solutions for deleted media, scientific and technological progress.
