Diabetic retinopathy is among the leading causes of blindness worldwide. The global prevalence of diabetic retinopathy is 77% in individuals with type 1 diabetes and 25% in those with type 2 diabetes. Considering that the risk of retinopathy increases with diabetes duration, we can predict that after 20 years, all patients with type 1 diabetes and 60% of patients with type 2 diabetes will develop retinopathy of varying severity.
