As the global shortage of caregivers persists and the importance of assistive technology in elderly care grows, promoting the sustained use of these technologies is crucial. This study examines the interactions between caregivers and elderly care recipients during the use of assistive technology, focusing on caregivers’ utterances and their impact on care recipients’ causal attributions. Applying Weiner's theory of causal attribution, we categorized caregivers’ utterances into four main typologies: “praise,” “affirmation/acceptance,” “confirmation,” and “feedback.“ Our analysis reveals that while “feedback” is strongly associated with “effort” attribution, which is essential for enhancing motivation and persistence in using assistive technology, “confirmation” utterances tend to have a weaker association with “effort” attribution. Moreover, the frequency of these utterance typologies varies significantly over time, with “confirmation” being more prevalent in the early stages and “affirmation/acceptance” increasing towards the later stages of technology use. These findings underscore the importance of timing and context in caregiver-care recipient communication. By providing insights into the complex dynamics of these interactions, this research contributes to the development of effective verbal interaction models that optimize care recipients’ experiences and engagement with assistive technology.
