The smart city concept has been trending in the last couple of years, where it is promising people to have a better quality of life. However, it is a fact that smart cities depend on digital technologies; thus, the whole idea of the smart city is associated with smart technologies including IoT and many more. The occurrence of digital technologies in smart cities does indeed have many positive impacts; however, it is a fact that it will have many disadvantages. In this research paper, the author focused on the applications of digital technologies in smart cities and how it would affect the citizens’ quality of life, discussing the role of it in enhancing the economy and focusing on the risks—both the physical and social, resulting from it.
