Equipping a Commercial Aerial Drone with a Modular Sensor System for Air Quality Monitoring

Equipping a commercial aerial drone with a modular sensor system for air quality monitoring can bring numerous benefits in terms of versatility and efficiency in data collection. Such a modular system allows the sensors to be changed and adapted according to the specific needs of the mission, thus ensuring precise and detailed monitoring of various air quality parameters. This research analyzed the construction and functional integration of the system consisting of the single-board computer Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W, the Waveshare 19739 UPS HAT (C) uninterruptible power module, and the Bosch BME680 or Sensirion SGP30 digital air quality sensors on a DJI Mini 4 Pro quadcopter commercial drone. The analysis of the data resulting from the completion of the planned flight mission to monitor a perimeter established by intermediate points indicates that it can be influenced by several factors, including pilot actions (flight style, load changes, altitude, etc.) and environmental conditions (air temperature, winds, etc.). The consistently high values of the energy source efficiency indices obtained, with the battery discharge of only up to 20% from the initial level, indicate that there was no problem with the drone, regardless of the type of flight, either free (without load) or with an additional load.
