Chapter II studies groups of automorphisms of sets and vector spaces. In §1–§5, we develop the elementary principles of the theory of permutation groups. We restrict ourselves to a discussion of only the most fundamental concepts. For more information, the reader may consult Wielandt [477]. Theorems 3.2 and 3.7 play an important role in the theory of solvable groups. We will have considerably more to say about permutation groups in Volume 3 with the help of character theory.
