Saint Katherine of Alexandria was a popular virgin martyr in the Middle Ages, particularly in German-speaking areas. She and other virgin martyrs were held as ideal models for all women, though Katherine’s status as the daughter of a king made her an ideal patron for women who belonged to the nobility or were otherwise wealthy. Her legend circulated in several vernacular languages, in addition to Latin and Greek, with over one hundred manuscripts existing in the German tradition. Her legend appears in several legendries, most notably in Das Passional and Märterbuch, as well as others produced in the Dominican convents, St. Katharinental Kloster in Nuremberg, and Katharinenkloster in Diessenhofen. Katherine’s reputation as a scholar aided in legitimizing these convents as a place of learning and emphasized women’s roles in sharing knowledge within their communities and elsewhere.
