A Revelation of Purgatory is an account of a vision in which its anonymous author witnesses the torments of a nun’s soul in Purgatory and arranges masses for her release. Largely neglected until the 1980s, it is now considered a key work in the study of late medieval female spirituality. Recent scholarship has identified the author as a Winchester anchoress with connections to Westminster, Syon Abbey, and the Lancastrian elite, and access to the writings of Continental visionaries. The latter is also confirmed by a recently discovered second work, the Instruction for Masses.
