This chapter introduces Elizabeth Barton’s tumultuous life and the books written about her revelations. Her life can be divided into two parts: The establishment of her fame as the “Holy Maid of Kent” through her miraculous activities; and her execution as a traitorous false prophet. At first, Barton was found orthodox on the points of faith by an ecclesiastical commission sent by the Archbishop of Canterbury, William Warham. But when she began to proclaim political prophecies and criticized King Henry VIII’s divorce from Catherine of Aragon, she became a threat to authorities. Her fame was propagated widely through an oral and written communication network, and the “Holy Maid of Kent” gained many followers from all walks of life. Her enormous influence led the king to execute her and also to censor the books that contain her miracles.
