Clare of Montefalco (St. Clare of the Cross)
摘要
Clare of Montefalco (c. 1268–1308) was a thirteenth century Italian mystic who received visions and gifts from God and is especially known for bearing an internal stigma on her heart. Clare entered the monastic life as a Franciscan tertiary but took her vows in 1290 under the Rule of St. Augustine. One year later, she became abbess of the Monastery of the Holy Cross and remained so until her death in 1308. Upon her death, her sisters performed an autopsy and found an image of the crucifix within the fibers and tissue of her heart. Clare was known for her ascetic lifestyle, her rigorous defense of virginity, and the various miracles she performed pre- and posthumously as well as defending Church doctrine during a tumultuous time.
