The Chronicle of St-Agnes or Vita Beatae Dianae is a mid-thirteenth century text produced by the Dominican sisters of Sant’Agnese in Bologna to ensure their status as a house of the Order of Preachers. While not properly a chronicle, and certainly not a saint’s Life, it nevertheless provides a roughly chronological––albeit selective––account of Sant’Agnese’s foundations, growth, development, and institutional struggles. It focuses particularly on the agency of its founder, Diana d’Andalò (d. 1236), and the support of a number of popes and masters of the order. It also makes reference to letters in the convent’s keeping that function as material evidence for their case.
