Secular Canonesses
摘要
Secular canonesses of medieval Europe were pious women who led devout lives free of strict enclosure without taking eternal vows of chastity, poverty, and obedience. These women, largely of the noble classes, were highly regarded within their communities. Although they resided behind monastic walls under the watchful eye of an abbess, they had more freedom than nuns, often interacting with the public and at times possessing great power.
