Filipa of Coimbra (also known as Filipa of Odivelas or Filipa of Lencastre) is a fifteenth-century Portuguese royal woman. Granddaughter of the royal couple João I and Philippa of Lancaster, daughter of a disgraced regent, she was raised at court by her sister, Queen Isabel of Coimbra, something that likely contributed to her erudite learning. After her sister’s death, she might have taken duties of raising the royal children, and the attempt her brother, Pedro, took on gaining the Aragonese throne gave her a role of intermediation. Some praise Filipa as the first female Portuguese poet, author of a couple of political writings, translator, and even illuminator. Only later copies of one letter, the dedication of a book, and the poem survive. In these writings, Filipa evidences deep knowledge of Portuguese history and the voice of a female writer, threading in the prejudices of the time.
